More than 32,000 crimes have been committed in the City of Baltimore in 2024 alone. Some consider Baltimore to be one of the most dangerous cities in America, given its violent crime rate of 2,027.01 per 100,000 people. Statistics like these could lead potential visitors to stay away from Baltimore, and residents might feel uncomfortable venturing into new neighborhoods.

Like any other large metropolitan city, crime in Baltimore is an issue that needs attention. However, that doesn’t mean the entire city is unsafe and dangerous. While you should always be aware of your surroundings and exercise care, there are several Baltimore neighborhoods where you can breathe easier and enjoy yourself more.

Where Are the Safest Baltimore Communities?

Baltimore’s police department maintains a crime map, providing visitors to its website with current information about where assaults, homicides, and other violent crimes are happening in the city. Based on this map, the following neighborhoods experienced very little reported criminal activity over the past year:

Blythewood

Travel south on Charles Street from East Northern Parkway, and you will soon arrive in the neighborhood of Blythewood. The stretch of Charles Street that runs between East Northern Parkway and East Cold Spring Lane experienced a handful of property crimes like auto theft in 2024. However, there were no robberies, assaults, or homicides reported in Blythewood or the areas immediately surrounding it.

East of Maryland Route 895

If you were to travel east of Maryland Route 895 along East Lombard Street, you would come upon Hopkins Bayview. The entire area south of Lombard Street, east of Route 895, west of Kane Street, and north of East Pratt Street saw little reported criminal activity. The Bayview neighborhood south of East Pratt Street experienced considerable property crimes, so exercise caution as you head toward Eastern Avenue.

Woodbury

The part of the Woodbury community west of Route 83, east of Greenspring Lane, and north of Rock Rose Avenue had no reported crime in 2024. This includes the neighborhood of Woodbury Woods just south of East Cold Spring Lane. However, there were numerous reports of criminal activity west of Greenspring Lane.

North Roland Park

Located near the city’s northern boundary, the North Roland Park/Poplar Hill community is another oasis from the city’s criminal activity. The same can be said for The Orchards, directly east of North Roland Park. In 2024, the most severe crime in this area was one instance of aggravated assault on Roland Avenue.

Mount Washington

More crimes were reported in the Mount Washington neighborhood in 2024 than in some of the other communities on this list. The bulk of these crimes were larcenies and other property crimes; in fact, you would have to travel south to East Northern Parkway or west to Pimlico Road to find instances of person-on-person crimes

However, the Cheswalde and Cross Country neighborhoods immediately to the west of Mount Washington had noticeably higher levels of crime. Exercise caution if your travels take you in that direction.

Be Alert and Informed When in Baltimore

Statistics do not lie: Baltimore is a city with some rough neighborhoods that can make visitors and residents feel unsafe. However, not every neighborhood is rough, and your risk of being the victim of a violent or property crime differs depending on where you are in the city.

The five communities mentioned above are not entirely crime-free. Nonetheless, the number of reported crimes in these areas is considerably less than in other parts of Baltimore. When traveling through these areas where crime occurs less frequently, remain aware of your surroundings and enjoy your visit to the area.
