The History of the Canton Neighborhood in Baltimore, MD
In 1785, Irish merchant and enslaver John O’Donnell came to the area from the Chinese port of Guangzhou, then called Canton by English speakers. O’Donnell named his plantation Canton. Neighborhood groups recently succeeded in efforts to have O’Donnell’s statue removed.
Canning and packing industries began to move into Canton in the 19th century, and neighborhoods for workers began to develop in the surrounding area. One of the largest historic districts in Baltimore and one of the oldest industrial communities in the U.S., Canton became home to diverse groups of immigrants. People from Wales, Ireland, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine settled in Canton throughout the 1800s.
Numerous festivals are held throughout the year at Canton Waterfront Park, which offers sweeping harbor views and access to boat ramps, trails, and a fishing pier. It’s also the site of Maryland’s Korean War Memorial, honoring Marylanders killed in the Korean War.

Traffic deaths are a national crisis, rising 10% in 2021 to a 16-year high. Whether caused by distracted driving, poor road design, or drunk drivers, car accidents are happening all too often. And almost all are preventable. We’ll hold the responsible parties accountable and help you recover the compensation you deserve and need to get back on your feet.

We’ll quickly determine whether you have a workers’ compensation claim, a third-party claim, or both.
Nothing quite captures freedom like a motorcycle ride. But that can come to a halt in a split second if you’re in a motorcycle accident. The lack of protection on a bike could mean long-lasting or even fatal injuries in the event of a crash. Call us today if you’ve been in a motorcycle collision.
Slip & Fall Accidents
Property owners can be held liable when they fail to keep the premises safe for visitors. Improper maintenance or dangerous obstacles can cause someone to slip or trip and fall. Broken bones and head injuries are common in slip and fall accidents. We can help you hold the negligent property owner responsible for your damages.
The trucking industry is heavily regulated, yet truck accidents still occur from overloaded rigs, poor maintenance, and fatigued drivers. When truckers make careless or reckless driving mistakes like dangerous lane changes, driving too fast for conditions, or driving while intoxicated, the consequences can be catastrophic.
Losing a loved one in a sudden accident causes immeasurable grief to a family. We have seen the emotional and financial toll it can take. We help families get justice and regain financial stability after the loss of a family member in an effort to help them begin the healing process.
Damages Available in Personal Injury Cases in Canton
We help personal injury victims recover all possible compensation available to them after an accident. For most, that means economic and non-economic damages.
Economic damages compensate victims for monetary losses associated with:
- Doctor bills
- Hospital stays
- Lost wages
- Emergency transport
- Psychological counseling
- Modifications to a home or vehicle to accommodate a disability
Economic damages are generally easy to calculate because they have a corresponding bill or invoice. We may engage economic experts to help estimate the value of your lost wages.
Non-economic damages (often referred to as pain and suffering) include:
- Physical anguish
- Mental trauma
- Disability or disfigurement
- Loss of consortium
These are the things that affect your quality of life. They’re harder to calculate and depend heavily on how you are personally affected by the accident.
If the defendant’s conduct was particularly egregious, punitive damages may be available. Punitive damages serve as punishment to the defendant and a deterrent for the type of behavior that caused you to get hurt.
What Does It Cost to Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer in Baltimore County?
Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingent fee basis. They agree to take your case with no upfront payment. They’ll collect their fee as a percentage of whatever compensation they recover on your behalf. That means they only get paid if they win (through a successful settlement or a trial verdict).
Most legal fees run in the range of 33% to 40% of the total award. Discuss the fee arrangement with your lawyer. You may also have to pay costs for expert witnesses, court filing fees, and other case-related expenses. Many attorneys take these costs out at the conclusion of the case, but some may require you to pay them as they are incurred.
What’s the Statute of Limitations in Maryland Personal Injury Cases?
The statute of limitations in Maryland is three years for most personal injury cases. It’s the same for filing a wrongful death lawsuit. That doesn’t mean you should wait years after your accident to get started. Always consult a reputable personal injury lawyer as soon as possible–the sooner they can get to work, the better chance you’ll have of winning your case.
Investigating and collecting evidence takes time. Witnesses are more likely to remember what happened and be willing to talk soon after the accident. Set yourself up for success and put your mind at ease by calling us today to learn more about your options.
