The History of the Federal Hill in Baltimore, MD
Federal Hill is an area in downtown Baltimore that is rich in history. Federal Hill comprises about 24 city blocks just south of the Inner Harbor. It was a defensive stronghold during the War of 1812 and replica cannons sit atop the neighborhood’s namesake hill in honor of its role as a military outpost. According to the Maryland Historical Society, since the founding of Baltimore, Federal Hill has been a popular point for viewing the city’s growth.
In 1788, 4,000 people feasted to celebrate the ratification by Maryland of the federal constitution and in honor of the new government, gave the hill its name. In 1795, an observatory was built to signal city merchants of the approach of their vessels. This service lasted a century. Shipyards have long been located near the hill, and it has been mined for clay and sand.
During the Civil War, union troops fortified Federal Hill. On the night of May 12, following the Baltimore riot of 1861, the hill was occupied in the middle of the night by a thousand Union troops. Their goal was to guarantee the allegiance of the city and the state of Maryland to the United States government. This fort and the Union army presence persisted for the duration of the Civil War. A large flag, a few cannons, and a small Grand Army of the Republic monument remain to testify to this period of the hill’s history.
No longer known for just its history, Federal Hill has developed into a thriving area of Baltimore. It has the following popular attractions:
- Cross Street Market, a 19th-century marketplace with plenty of modern day eats and drinks
- The American Visionary Art Museum
- The Baltimore Museum of Industry
- Independent art galleries, such as Crystal Moll Gallery, School 33 Art Center, and Tradestone Gallery
Many structures in Federal Hill are included in the Federal Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and 2003.
