The History of the Charles Village in Baltimore, MD

Charles Village is a lively community on the north side of Baltimore with a close-knit, artsy atmosphere. The neighborhood got its start in 1869 when a developer purchased 50 acres of land to create a community they planned to call “Peabody Heights.” The area grew during the early 1900s thanks to the presence of street cars and, in fact, was one of the first neighborhoods to develop tract housing.

The name “Peabody Heights” stuck around for about a century before the dividing lines of Boston got redrawn. At that time, the area was renamed Charles Village after Charles Street, one of the main thoroughfares in the neighborhood.

Today, Charles Village is home to about 8,000 people, many of whom are middle-class renters. Johns Hopkins University is one of the neighborhood’s best-known landmarks, as is the Baltimore Museum of Art. Families will love spending weekends at the Maryland Zoo, and the Charles Street Scenic Byway makes it easy to get around. The Baltimore Ravens play just three miles from Charles Village, and the Baltimore-Washington International Airport is only thirteen miles outside its borders.

Damages Available in Charles Village Personal Injury Cases

In personal injury cases, there are a few types of damages available to victims. Economic damages represent any financial losses you’ve suffered as a result of your injury.

These can include things like:

  • Medical bills
  • Lost wages
  • Diminished earning capacity
  • Property damage

You can also sue for non-economic damages, which cover losses that don’t have a definitive economic value. These losses may include:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress
  • Scarring and disfigurement
  • Reduced quality of life
  • Loss of consortium

Finally, you can sue for punitive damages. These apply in cases where the defendant’s behavior was especially heinous. Punitive damages are meant to punish the defendant for their wrongdoing and deter other people from behaving the same way in the future. However, these damages are relatively rare.

Statute of Limitations in Maryland Personal Injury Cases

Statute of Limitations in Maryland Personal Injury Cases

In most personal injury cases, there is a time limit on how long you have to file a lawsuit after an accident. After this deadline passes, you will not be able to recover damages for your claim. In Maryland, that deadline is three years after the date the accident occurred.

There are some situations in which your case can be heard after the statute of limitations has passed, but those are rare. The best thing to do is speak to a Charles Village personal injury lawyer as soon as possible after your accident. We can help you determine if your case is still eligible for a court hearing and, if so, start building a solid defense.
