The History of the Glen Burnie Community in Baltimore, MD

Located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Glen Burnie is an unincorporated town and suburb of Baltimore with a population of just under 70,000.

Glen Burnie’s history began in 1812 when a district attorney named Elias Glenn established a county seat in what today is known as Brooklyn Park, MD. The property was initially named “Glennsburne.”

The property was passed down generations of Elias Glenn’s descendants. In 1854, William Wilkins Glenn, Elias Glenn’s grandson, incorporated a prominent mining, furnace, and manufacturing company into the property. This business would go on to flourish for the rest of the 19th century, bringing prosperity and more land to the community.

When William Wilkins Glenn passed away, his family members took control of the area, and it became an official state subdivision in 1888 with the name “Glenburnie.” The family hired two powerful individuals to promote the town, and eventually, in 1930, its name became two words instead of one. Postmaster Louis J. DeAlba is credited with the decision to change the name to Glen Burnie.

Today, Glen Burnie is a bustling suburb with many important landmarks such as the Thomas A. Dixon, Jr. Aircraft Observation Area, Sawmill Creek Park, The Benson-Hammond House, and Friendship Park

Damages Available in Personal Injury Cases in Glen Burnie

Damages Available in Personal Injury Cases in Glen Burnie

In Glen Burnie, victims of personal injury accidents can seek economic, non-economic, and sometimes punitive damages.
Economic damages are intended to compensate you for the financial losses you’ve incurred due to your injury. Lost wages, decreased earning capacity, out-of-pocket expenses, and medical bills all qualify.

Non-economic damages compensate you for the effects of your injury that aren’t as easy to assign a value to. Depression, pain and suffering, emotional distress, decreased enjoyment of life, and loss of consortium are examples that fall under this category.

Even though most personal injury cases do not garner punitive damages, they might be available in cases where the at-fault party’s conduct was especially malicious or egregious. Punitive damages are meant to deter society from acting as the defendant did and to “punish” that person for their actions.

What Does It Cost To Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer in Anne Arundel County?

What Does It Cost To Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer in Anne Arundel County?

Our Glen Burnie personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee. You won’t pay us anything upfront to represent you, and instead, we will take our payment as a percentage of any financial award we ultimately obtain for you. The percentage will vary depending on the facts of your case, but it will be around 33% in most instances.

To illustrate, if we agree with you on a 35% contingency fee and we obtain $200,000 for you, we would receive $70,000 of that $200,000, or the full amount minus the agreed-upon percentage.

This system is beneficial because it allows you to hire an attorney when you might not otherwise be able to, and it also incentivizes our legal team to maximize your compensation award.

If you have further questions about the contingency fee system, feel free to reach out to us at your convenience. We’d be happy to discuss this during your free consultation.

Statute of Limitations in Maryland Personal Injury Cases

Statute of Limitations in Maryland Personal Injury Cases

Maryland’s statute of limitations establishes deadlines for when lawsuits of each kind must be filed. For personal injury cases, you will generally have three years from the date of the accident to file suit.

However, there are exceptions and nuances to this statute of limitations depending on the circumstances of your situation. For example, in medical malpractice cases, you have five years from the date of your injury or three years from when you discovered it, whichever is shorter. And in other cases, the statute of limitations can be tolled (paused).

We recommend contacting us as soon as you can if you’re unsure whether you can still file a lawsuit. That is a determination we can likely make during your initial consultation.
