The History of Bolton Hill in Baltimore, MD

Bolton Hill is a quiet historic community nestled in the heart of Baltimore. Much of the neighborhood is made up of restored 19th-century townhouses set on beautiful tree-lined streets. As you drive through Bolton Hill, you’ll see white marble steps leading up to red brick buildings with high ceilings and historic charm.

In the early 1800s, a landowner named George Grundy purchased the area now known as Bolton Hill for his estate. He named the property after Bolton le Moors, a parish in historic Lancashire, England. In 1850, the neighborhood started transitioning from a single large estate to lines of traditional Baltimore row houses. City planner Thomas Poppleton decided to build the neighborhood’s grid on a diagonal instead of the standard north-south orientation to follow the line of what is now Pennsylvania Avenue.

During the late 1800s, Bolton Hill remained a relatively diverse neighborhood. Black residents lived in Bolton Hill’s alley houses and worked in the white-owned mansions in the area. There was also a large German Jewish community on the western end of the neighborhood.

Sadly, this diversity didn’t last, and in the 1920s, local officials began working to push non-white residents out of the neighborhood. By the 1960s, most of the Jewish community had moved to Baltimore’s northwestern suburbs, and many black residents had been driven out. The neighborhood was the target of an urban renewal campaign around that time, and by 1971, it had been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Bolton Hill Community Association works to preserve the historic beauty of the neighborhood and support diversity within its borders.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and President Woodrow Wilson all spent time living in Bolton Hill. The University of Maryland Medical Center and the National Aquarium sit just south of the neighborhood’s borders, and Druid Hill Park is a few minutes to the north. The Baltimore Museum of Art is an easy drive from Bolton Hill, as is the Edgar Allen Poe House and Museum. Penn Station is five minutes from Bolton Hill, and the Baltimore-Washington International Airport is an easy half-hour drive.
